Lo que el mar se llevó
2025-2022
Experimental film in progress. This video piece serves as a dreamlike portrait of a place where I grew up. It takes place in a small coastal village in Uruguay, where houses are sequentially named by letter and number. The A1 is the first house of the village and one of the two last ones standing of its kind.

This village started with two stilt houses around 1904 that were made with wood and straw from the surrounding areas. Candlelight and wells were used instead of electricity and running water. Today, in 2025, there are 724 permanent residents in the village but only two stilt houses left, as the others have been swallowed by the sea due to global warming and the rising sea level. Inhabitants today live in concrete houses, which are also under threat. There are two stilt houses without electricity nor running water left.

The film aims to be a reflection of our times and how we live, exploring themes of environmentalism and the ephemerality of life. The main characters are the house, an old man, and a dog. The old man and his relationship with the dog symbolize a connection and harmony with nature that has been largely lost. By portraying their days in the cabin, the film invites the audience to reflect on the significance of time and how it defines us. Are we defined by what we do “for a living” or by what we do when we have little to do? The film portrays the beauty in simplicity and captures a way of life that is fading away.

The following works titled Film stills, 2022-2023 are a series of video stills from the film footage printed on crystal voile cotton silk. They were printed on this fabric to mimic the effect the red curtains have on the inside of the stilt house, and to resonate with the fragile transience of life, and of the stilt house itself.
